We know that life as an immigrant can be more difficult, especially when it comes to finding a job and building a career. As a graduate of a German university, you have excellent opportunities to build a career in Germany: In this guide, we show you how to continue on your path after studying computer science.

#### Criteria for finding a job after your graduation

After graduation, graduates are faced with the challenge of applying the theory they have learned for years in practice. To this end, however, they must already find a job. It is not always easy to find the first job after graduation. Below you will find the most important criteria for finding a job after graduation.

#### Internships during and after the studies

After or during your studies, people often start with a voluntary service, an internship or a trainee program to gain first work experience. To find out which profession suits you best, an internship is the best way. The idea is not bad at all, even if the salary is not exactly exhilarating. Besides, as an intern you have the opportunity to make mistakes and thus learn a lot. At the very least, this is the easiest way to enter professional life and gain initial experience at the same time. Career counseling centers at universities even advise career starters with several years of work experience to start with an internship after graduation. After all, a bachelor's degree is now considered basic training.

#### 1 - Student internship

For most students, an internship is mandatory during their studies. The mandatory internship usually lasts between 6 weeks and 6 months, depending on the course of study and the university.

##### So what should you pay attention to?

* In terms of the size of the business, you should consider what experience you already have and what type of business will help you get ahead. Large companies often require more experience than small, family-run businesses. 
* In terms of location, it's worth stretching your feet for a study internship over a longer period of time and going beyond if necessary. Most of the time, interesting companies are located in large cities or even abroad.  
* For those who cannot financially afford to move abroad, an internship nearby can sometimes be worthwhile.  Many internships result in permanent positions as interns or even lucrative part-time jobs for the coming semesters.
* Even with a student internship, it pays to have an internship supervisor who can help you with questions and problems. Of course, if you are already responsible for more responsible tasks, you can always turn to other employees for help. It is especially important that you receive feedback at the end of your internship so that you can assess your performance during the internship and your overall skills.
* Compensation for an internship during your studies can vary greatly. By law, a mandatory internship does not have to be compensated. Therefore, there are even some companies that only accept mandatory interns. A voluntary internship, on the other hand, should be remunerated. However, in a financial company you will usually receive a higher remuneration than in the social sector.

#### 2 - The internship after graduation

You have probably already completed internships during your studies and have an idea of the professional direction you would like to take after your bachelor's or master's degree. If this is not the case and you lack practical experience, it is advisable not to jump into every job right away, but to complete an internship first. This will also increase your chances on the job market.

##### So what should you pay attention to?

* As far as the choice of company is concerned, you should consider in advance what kind of company you would like to work for. The choice of an internship is particularly important after graduation, especially since there is a chance that you will be taken on directly.
* The location also plays a role in that you should consider whether you can imagine living in the city for a longer period of time. Of course, this only applies if you can imagine actually working at the company.
* As a rule, a certain amount of responsibility is required of you after graduation. Therefore, there is usually no concrete internship support. However, there should be contact persons in every company for difficult situations. The same applies to feedback after the internship.
* Although the internship remuneration should actually be adapted to your qualifications, this is not the rule. The amount of compensation usually depends on the duration of the internship and on the company itself. With the introduction of the statutory minimum wage in 2017, you are entitled to an hourly wage of €8.84 for a voluntary internship that lasts longer than three months. You are also entitled to 20 days of vacation per year during a voluntary internship. 
* For a six-month internship, that's 10 days off. You can also terminate your internship with four weeks' notice.
* Once the internship is over, you are entitled to a simple internship certificate.

A complete application in Germany usually includes a cover letter, a curriculum vitae in table form and your references.
* Make sure that your cover letter clearly and concisely explains why you are interested in the position and the company, what skills you bring to the table, and why you are the perfect candidate.
* Also, it is still common to include a photo with your resume when applying for a job in Germany, even if it is not required. Show your competent and friendly side, preferably with a professional portrait.
* If your company of choice is impressed by your application, you will usually be invited for an interview. During this interview, the employer wants to get a personal impression of you - however, you can also ask questions, for example, about your future position, the company or the corporate culture. Zu diesem Zweck müssen sie jedoch bereits einen Arbeitsplatz finden. Es ist nicht immer leicht, die erste Stelle nach dem Studium zu finden. Im Folgenden sind die wichtigsten Kriterien für die Stellensuche nach dem Studium aufgeführt.

#### Praktika während des Studiums und nach dem Studium

Nach oder während des Studiums beginnt man oft mit einem Freiwilligendienst, einem Praktikum oder einem Traineeprogramm, um erste Berufserfahrung zu sammeln.
Um herauszufinden, welcher Beruf am besten zu Ihnen passt, ist ein Praktikum der beste Weg. Die Idee ist gar nicht so schlecht, auch wenn das Gehalt nicht gerade berauschend ist. Außerdem hat man als Praktikant die Möglichkeit, Fehler zu machen und so eine Menge zu lernen. Zumindest ist dies der einfachste Weg, ins Berufsleben einzusteigen und gleichzeitig erste Erfahrungen zu sammeln. Die Berufsberatungsstellen an den Hochschulen raten sogar Berufseinsteigern mit mehrjähriger Berufserfahrung, nach dem Studium mit einem Praktikum zu beginnen. Schließlich gilt ein Bachelor-Abschluss heute als Grundausbildung.

#### 1 - Das Studienpraktikum

Für die meisten Studenten ist ein Praktikum während des Studiums obligatorisch. Das Pflichtpraktikum dauert in der Regel zwischen 6 Wochen und 6 Monaten, je nach Studiengang und Hochschule.

##### Worauf du achten solltest?

* Im Hinblick auf die Größe des Unternehmens solltest du überlegen, welche Erfahrung du bereits hast und welche Art von Unternehmen dir helfen wird, weiterzukommen. Große Unternehmen verlangen oft mehr Erfahrung als kleine, familiengeführte Betriebe.
* Was den Standort angeht, lohnt es sich, die Füße für ein Studienpraktikum über einen längeren Zeitraum auszustrecken und ggf. auch darüber hinaus zu gehen. Meistens befinden sich interessante Unternehmen in Großstädten oder sogar im Ausland.
* Für jene, die es sich finanziell nicht leisten können, ins Ausland zu ziehen, kann ein Praktikum in der Nähe manchmal lohnenswert sein.  Aus vielen Praktika ergeben sich Festanstellungen als Praktikant oder auch lukrative Nebenjobs für die kommenden Semester.
* Selbst bei einem Studentenpraktikum lohnt es sich, einen Praktikumsbetreuer zu haben, der dir bei Fragen und Problemen helfen kann. Wenn du bereits für verantwortungsvollere Aufgaben zuständig bist, kannst du dich natürlich auch jederzeit an andere Beschäftigte wenden.
* Besonders wichtig ist es, dass du am Ende deines Praktikums ein Feedback erhältst, damit du deine Leistungen während des Praktikums und deine allgemeinen Fähigkeiten einschätzen kannst.
* Die Vergütung eines Praktikums während des Studiums kann sehr unterschiedlich ausfallen. Laut Gesetz muss ein Pflichtpraktikum nicht vergütet werden. Deshalb gibt es sogar einige Unternehmen, die nur Pflichtpraktikanten annehmen. Ein freiwilliges Praktikum hingegen sollte vergütet werden. In einem Finanzunternehmen erhalten Sie jedoch in der Regel eine höhere Vergütung als im sozialen Bereich.

#### 2 - Das Praktikum nach dem Studium

Vermutlich hast du bereits während deines Studiums Praktika absolviert und eine Vorstellung davon, in welche berufliche Richtung du nach deinem Bachelor- oder Masterabschluss gehen möchtest. Sollte dies nicht der Fall sein und es fehlt dir an praktischer Erfahrung, ist es ratsam, nicht gleich in jeden Job zu springen, sondern zunächst ein Praktikum zu absolvieren. Dadurch erhöhen sich auch deine Arbeitsmarktchancen.

##### Worauf du achten solltest?

* Hinsichtlich der Wahl des Unternehmens solltest du dir im Voraus überlegen, in welcher Art von Unternehmen du gerne arbeiten würdest. Gerade nach dem Studium ist die Wahl eines Praktikums besonders wichtig, zumal ja auch die Chance bestehen kann, dass du direkt eingestellt werden kannst.
* Auch der Standort spielt insofern eine Rolle, als dass du dir überlegen solltest, ob du dir vorstellen kannst, für einen längeren Zeitraum in der Stadt zu leben. Selbstverständlich nur, wenn du dir vorstellen kannst, bei diesem Unternehmen auch tatsächlich zu arbeiten.
* In der Regel wird von Ihnen nach dem Studium ein gewisses Maß an Verantwortungsbewusstsein verlangt. Daher gibt es in der Regel keine konkrete Praktikumsbetreuung. Ansprechpartner für schwierige Situationen sollte es aber in jedem Unternehmen immer geben. Dasselbe gilt für das Feedback nach dem Praktikum.
* Zwar sollte die Praktikumsvergütung eigentlich an deine Qualifikation angepasst sein, aber das ist nicht die Regel. Die Höhe der Vergütung hängt meist von der Dauer des Praktikums und vom Unternehmen selbst ab.
* Mit der Einführung des gesetzlichen Mindestlohns im Jahr 2017 steht dir bei einem freiwilligen Praktikum, das länger als drei Monate dauert, ein Stundenlohn von 8,84 € zu. Außerdem hast du während eines freiwilligen Praktikums Anspruch auf 20 Tage Urlaub pro Jahr. Im Falle eines sechsmonatigen Praktikums bedeutet dies 10 freie Tage. Zudem kannst du dein Praktikum mit einer Kündigungsfrist von vier Wochen beenden.

Am Ende des Praktikums steht dir ein einfaches Praktikantenzeugnis zu.

#### 3 - Nach dem Praktikum

So kannst du bereits in Deutschland einen Einstieg in einen IT-Job finden, nachdem du erste Berufserfahrungen im IT-Bereich gesammelt hast, deine Teamfähigkeit unter Beweis gestellt und damit das eine oder andere Vorurteil (Informatiker sind berührungsängstliche Nerds) ausgeräumt hast.

Bei der Suche nach der ersten Stelle versucht man oft, die Suche so breit wie möglich zu fächern, um keine guten Arbeitgeber zu verpassen. Dabei kann man jedoch leicht den Überblick verlieren. Oft ist es sinnvoll, zunächst in der Region deiner Wahl nach einer Stelle zu suchen. Wenn du zum Beispiel in Köln studierst und dir vorstellen kannst, dort zu arbeiten, kannst du deine Suche zunächst auf den Raum Köln beschränken. Diess hat den Vorteil, dass du flexibler bist. Wenn ein Unternehmen auf deine Bewerbung antwortet und dir in naher Zukunft ein Vorstellungsgespräch anbietet, ist eine weite Anreise oft ein Hindernis. Doch wenn du zeitlich flexibel bist und dann beim Vorstellungsgespräch überzeugst, dann kannst du das Glück haben, bevorzugt zu werden - vor allem, wenn die Stelle am besten schon am Vortag besetzt wurde. Da die wenigsten Unternehmen auf einen überzeugenden Bewerber warten werden, der viel mehr durch die Entfernung eingeschränkt ist, birgt die regionale Stellensuche dabei den Vorteil, dass im optimalen Fall kein Umzug notwendig ist. Dies ist natürlich nur möglich, wenn man sich noch nicht für einen Traumarbeitgeber entschieden hat.

##### Worauf du achten solltest?

* Falls du ein interessantes Stellenangebot findest, das deinen Qualifikationen entspricht, zögere nicht, dich zu bewerben.
* Denk daran, dass die Bewerbungsunterlagen deine Visitenkarte sind und eine Gelegenheit, einen guten ersten Eindruck zu hinterlassen. 
* Deutsche Unternehmen schätzen es sehr, wenn du dir mit einer professionell wirkenden Bewerbung Mühe gibst.
* In der Regel sind die Dokumente in deutscher Sprache einzureichen, obwohl einige Unternehmen ausdrücklich Bewerbungen in englischer Sprache verlangen. Daher empfiehlt es sich, im Vorfeld zu klären, in welcher Sprache die Bewerbung eingereicht werden soll.
