Salary negotiations often seem intimidating to new employees, but they are among the most important and difficult conversations to have early in your career. Sometimes applicants make decisions in salary negotiations that run counter to their own interests.

#### Don't talk about "money" right away in the interview.

The application must focus on enthusiasm for the job and the company. Otherwise, an unpleasant and unsettling feeling will arise. For this reason, it makes sense to wait until the topic has been addressed or until the second interview takes place.

The probability that you will negotiate your future salary in the first interview is quite low. Usually salary negotiations are part of the second interview. It is important to be prepared for this and to know your own market value accurately.

#### Gather information about the company

First of all, you should gather information so that you can consider your claims to be reasonable. Be prepared to explain the value you would bring to the company. To increase flexibility at the negotiating table, develop alternatives to the current negotiations, keeping in mind that the other party's alternatives may be less attractive than yours.

#### Provide an exact annual salary, not a salary range.

Example: ''I am asking for a salary of 46,530 euros gross per year''. Do not mention: wishes for additional benefits such as vacation pay, travel allowances or capital-forming benefits.

#### Answer the question about your previous salary honestly.

If you have earned too little so far, say so openly and confidently: "I don't think my previous salary is a good comparison value. It was my starting salary and I negotiated badly at the time and sold myself short. In the meantime, I envision a salary at market conditions - in the amount of ...".

#### Appear confident

Many start salary negotiations shyly and cautiously: "I'd like more money, but I'm a little uncomfortable with that now...". Never do this!  Also If you're unsure about a gap in your career, for example, think about what important tasks you did during that time and prepare to tell about them with enthusiasm.

You're not asking for a handout, you're negotiating! And you don't negotiate for less than the equivalent value of your work performance. If you know your value, you can confidently demand it: "I think 57,650 euros is appropriate." Of course, you must not react impertinently. But don't degenerate into a supplicant either. You can't argue in the subjunctive. That is a taboo in any negotiation.

#### Never accept the first offer

This solution is never the best in salary negotiations. With an offer, the boss betrays himself and signals: There is willingness to negotiate and room for maneuver. This advantage must be exploited by repeating your statement once again, looking horrified and then remaining silent.

#### If you are offered too low, stay flexible and find a compromise.

After all, this is a salary negotiation, not a judgment about you!

Let's say your research showed that you would most likely fall into the salary category between €70,000 and €80,000, with the next higher category within reach. Instead of saying, "I think I make €80,000," it would be better to say, "Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that people like me usually make €80,000 to €90,000." This is not an assertion, but a statement. However, the "anchor" of €80,000 to €90,000 - a reference point that may or may not be relevant to the discussion - could very well steer the numbers toward the upper target, as this statement has a strong signaling effect.

#### Salary Negotiations in a Start-up Company Vs. Established Companies

Now, how about adapting your salary negotiation strategy to a start-up company where you are a third employee? Of course, no HR employee will be in charge of the negotiation, and the salary will not be determined by existing pay scales. In this case, you may have more leeway to negotiate a creative package that includes stock options.

However, large, established companies often measure applicants against well-defined job categories with a specific salary range. You may also be negotiating salary with recruiters or hiring managers rather than your future boss. If you are negotiating your salary in this environment, consider what salary category a candidate with your qualifications and experience would be placed in, and then aim for a salary at the high end of that range.

#### The more confidently you negotiate, the more you will achieve.

Supervisors like to reject salary demands with so-called "killer arguments". You should be able to (mentally) anticipate and refute these arguments. In this way, you take the pressure off the conversation and take the wind out of its sails. For example, you could say, "I know you don't have a big budget right now. But with Project XY, I'm going to change just that: It will bring in more revenue..." The supervisor could also say that he was not satisfied with your past performance. This is a classic, aimed at making the employee feel insecure. What specific performance has fallen short of your expectations?".

#### Adapt negotiation style for greatest success

Individual differences in negotiation style determine how salary is negotiated and what is achieved, according to Michelle Marks of George Mason University and Crystal Harold of Temple University in a study published in the Journal of Organizational Behavior.

The study surveyed 149 professionals who had been hired in the past three years about their salary negotiations for their current positions, including their attitudes toward negotiation and risk, their negotiation strategies and outcomes, and their satisfaction with the salary negotiation process.

The researchers identified five types of negotiation strategies: Collaboration (problem solving with the goal of achieving the best possible outcome for both parties); Competition (attempting to maximize one's own outcome without regard to others); Accommodation (putting the other party's concerns first); Compromise (attempting to find middle ground); and Avoidance (avoiding negotiation altogether).

Aside from the position applicants held at the negotiating table, the choice of negotiating strategy proved to be the most important factor in a successful salary negotiation. Those who chose to negotiate their salary rather than accept the offer at hand were able to increase their starting salary by an average of $5,000, primarily through the use of competitive and collaborative strategies. Those who negotiated competitively did better than those who focused on collaboration, but were more satisfied with the negotiation process than those who negotiated competitively. Compromise and accommodation strategies, on the other hand, were not associated with salary increases.

The conclusion of the study's authors is that it pays to negotiate vigorously for a salary increase. They also encourage employers to realize that giving employees leeway in negotiating their starting salaries can contribute to a happier and more productive workforce.

#### Informationen über das Unternehmen sammeln

#### Die Frage nach dem früheren Gehalt ehrlich beantworten.

Falls du bisher zu wenig verdient hast, sage dies offen und selbstbewusst: "Ich glaube nicht, dass mein bisheriges Gehalt ein guter Vergleichswert ist. Es war mein Einstiegsgehalt und ich habe damals schlecht verhandelt und mich unter Wert verkauft. Inzwischen stelle ich mir ein Gehalt zu Marktbedingungen vor - in Höhe von ...".

#### Selbstbewusst Auftreten

Viele beginnen Gehaltsverhandlungen schüchtern und zurückhaltend: "Ich hätte gerne mehr Geld, aber das ist mir jetzt ein bisschen unangenehm...". Niemals so etwas tun!  Auch Wenn du dir zum Beispiel über eine Lücke in deiner Karriere unsicher bist, überlege dir, welche wichtigen Aufgaben du in dieser Zeit erledigt hast, und bereite dich darauf vor, mit Begeisterung davon zu erzählen.

Du bittest nicht um ein Almosen, du verhandelst! Und zwar nicht für weniger als den Gegenwert deiner Arbeitsleistung. Wenn du deinen Wert kennst, kannst du ihn selbstbewusst einfordern: "Ich denke, 57.650 Euro sind angemessen." Natürlich darfst du dabei nicht unverschämt reagieren. Aber auch nicht zu einem Bittsteller verkommen. Du kannst nicht im Konjunktiv argumentieren. Das ist in jeder Verhandlung ein Tabu.

#### Niemals das erste Angebot annehmen

Diese Lösung ist bei Gehaltsverhandlungen nie die beste. Mit einem Angebot verrät der Chef sich selbst und signalisiert: Verhandlungsbereitschaft und Handlungsspielraum bestehen. Diesen Vorteil gilt es auszunutzen, in dem man seine Angabe noch einmal wiederholt, entsetzt schaut und dann schweigt.

#### Wenn dir ein zu niedriges Angebot gemacht wird, bleibe flexibel und finde einen Kompromiss.

Schließlich handelt es sich um eine Gehaltsverhandlung, nicht um ein Urteil über dich!

Angenommen, deine Recherchen haben ergeben, dass du höchstwahrscheinlich in die Gehaltskategorie zwischen 70.000 und 80.000 € fallen würdest, wobei die nächsthöhere Kategorie in greifbarer Nähe liegt. Anstatt zu sagen: "Ich glaube, ich verdiene 80.000 €", wäre es besser zu sagen: "Korrigieren Sie mich, wenn ich falsch liege, aber ich habe gehört, dass Leute wie ich normalerweise 80.000 € bis 90.000 € verdienen". Dies ist keine Behauptung, sondern eine Aussage. Allerdings könnte der "Anker" von 80.000 bis 90.000 Euro - ein Bezugspunkt, der für die Diskussion relevant sein kann oder auch nicht - die Zahlen sehr wohl in Richtung auf das obere Ziel lenken, da diese Aussage eine starke Signalwirkung hat.

#### Gehaltsverhandlungen in einem Start-up-Unternehmen Vs. Etablierte Unternehmen

Wie wäre es nun, wenn du deine Gehaltsverhandlungsstrategie an ein Start-up-Unternehmen anpassen würdest, in dem du als dritter Mitarbeiter beschäftigt bist? Selbstverständlich wird kein Mitarbeiter der Personalabteilung für die Verhandlung zuständig sein, und das Gehalt wird nicht durch die bestehenden Tarife bestimmt. In diesem Fall bleibt dir vielleicht mehr Spielraum, um ein kreatives Paket zu verhandeln, das auch Aktienbezugsrechte beinhaltet.

Allerdings messen große, etablierte Unternehmen die Bewerber oft an genau definierten Stellenkategorien mit einer bestimmten Gehaltsspanne. Vielleicht handelt das Gehalt auch eher mit Personalvermittlern oder Personalchefs aus als mit deinem zukünftigen Boss. Falls du in diesem Umfeld über dein Gehalt verhandeln solltest, überlege dir, in welche Gehaltskategorie ein Bewerber mit deiner Qualifikation und Erfahrung eingeordnet werden würde, und strebe dann ein Gehalt am oberen Ende dieser Spanne an.

#### Je selbstbewusster du verhandelst, desto mehr wirst du erreichen.

Vorgesetzte weisen die Gehaltsforderung gerne mit so genannten Totschlagargumenten zurück. Du solltest diese Argumente (gedanklich) vorwegnehmen und entkräften können. Auf diese Weise entlasten das Gespräch und entziehen ihm den Wind aus den Segeln. Beispielsweise könnte man sagen: "Ich weiß, Sie haben im Moment kein großes Budget. Aber mit Projekt XY werde ich genau das ändern: Es bringt mehr Umsatz..." Der Vorgesetzte könnte auch sagen, dass er mit Ihrer bisherigen Leistung nicht zufrieden war. Hierbei handelt es sich um einen Klassiker, der darauf abzielt, den Mitarbeiter zu verunsichern. Welche konkrete Leistung ist hinter deinen Erwartungen zurückgeblieben?". 

#### Verhandlungsstil für größtmöglichen Erfolg anpassen

Die individuellen Differenzen im Verhandlungsstil bestimmen, wie man über das Gehalt verhandelt und was man erreicht, wie Michelle Marks von der George Mason University und Crystal Harold von der Temple University in einer im Journal of Organizational Behavior veröffentlichten Studie feststellten.

Im Rahmen der Studie wurden 149 Fachkräfte, die in den letzten drei Jahren eingestellt worden waren, zu ihren Gehaltsverhandlungen für ihre derzeitige Stelle befragt, einschließlich ihrer Einstellung zu Verhandlungen und Risiken, ihrer Verhandlungsstrategien und -ergebnisse sowie ihrer Zufriedenheit mit dem Prozess der Gehaltsverhandlungen.

Die Forscher identifizierten fünf Arten von Verhandlungsstrategien: Zusammenarbeit (Problemlösung mit dem Ziel, das bestmögliche Ergebnis für beide Parteien zu erzielen); Wettbewerb (Versuch, das eigene Ergebnis ohne Rücksicht auf andere zu maximieren); Entgegenkommen (die Belange der anderen Partei in den Vordergrund stellen); Kompromiss (Versuch, einen Mittelweg zu finden); und Vermeidung (völlige Vermeidung von Verhandlungen).

Abgesehen von der Position, die die Bewerber am Verhandlungstisch innehatten, erwies sich die Wahl der Verhandlungsstrategie als der wichtigste Faktor für eine erfolgreiche Gehaltsverhandlung. Diejenigen, die sich dafür entschieden, über ihr Gehalt zu verhandeln, anstatt das vorliegende Angebot zu akzeptieren, konnten ihr Einstiegsgehalt um durchschnittlich 5.000 Dollar erhöhen, vor allem durch den Einsatz von Wettbewerbs- und Kooperationsstrategien. Diejenigen, die wettbewerbsorientiert verhandelten, schnitten besser ab als diejenigen, die sich auf Zusammenarbeit konzentrierten, waren jedoch zufriedener mit dem Verhandlungsprozess als diejenigen, die wettbewerbsorientiert verhandelten. Kompromiss- und Akkommodationsstrategien wurden dagegen nicht mit Gehaltserhöhungen in Verbindung gebracht.

Die Schlussfolgerung der Verfasser der Studie lautet, dass es sich lohnt, mit Nachdruck über eine Gehaltserhöhung zu verhandeln.
